As far as I can see, these two positions are part of the same game, so I will start with Position II: 1. Rc7! Nd7 (if 1..Qxc7 2. Qxg6+ Kh8 3. Qxe8+ Kh7 4. Nxe6 +-) 2. Rxd7! Qxd7 3. Qxg6+ Kh8 4. Nh5! Rg8 (position I) 5. Qxg8+ Kxg8 6. Nf6+ and 7. Nxd7
I am 100% impressed !! The two positions come indeed from the same game ( I played with White).
1Rc7! is the right move. After 1..Nd7, I should have exchanged the queens and captured the knight. I did play 2 Rd7 (?) and after 4 Nh5! my opponent should have played 4..Rf8=
Instead, 4..Rg8? lets the simple but efficient 5Qg8+! and the following fork as the previous anonymous commenter noted.
Congrats for finding the key wining moves and linking the 2 positions !!
